What is it like to live in Legal, Alberta?

This vibrant community located just 50 kilometers north of Edmonton on Highway 651 is fast becoming one of the 'communities on the move' in terms of its increased focus on the map of Alberta.

Not only is Legal an ideal place to reside with the charm of country living on the doorstep of city amenities, it also boasts economic development opportunities, many as yet untapped.

The past few years have witnessed continual residential growth coupled with a strong business environment.

Visitors are welcomed to this bilingual town with a visual display of the town's strong cultural heritage. Many murals depicting the history of the area sit proudly about the town and have become a popular tourist attraction. Summer visitors to Legal may have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful aroma and taste of freshly baked bread coming from a working open oven (le four a' pain) built as a replica of that used by our ancestors.

A new community centre, built by the A.C.F.A. Centralta is a welcome addition to the town as a venue to host community events as well as private functions.

The annual festival known as the "Fete au Village" is held the last weekend of July and is an example of the community spirit that exists in the town. This well attended event is an opportunity for new visitors to celebrate the French culture of Legals pioneers as well as an opportune time for a reunion of family and friends.

Volunteers are an integral part of the community and their work is evident in many aspects of local spirit. Both the Fire Department and the Ambulance Service are operated by a dedicated group of individuals who give tirelessly of their time and efforts to provide an exemplary service to the Town and the surrounding area. These volunteers have gone "above and beyond" as the generator of funds for the purchase of state of the art equipment for both the departments with no burden on the ratepayers.

Police protection in the Town is provided by a RCMP detachment in Morinville, 17 km south on Highway 2.

The rolling topography surrounding Legal makes it an excellent location for outdoor sports such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking. As an added convenience you don't even have to leave Town to fish with a stocked pond in the lovely day use park.

The Town offers modern conveniences: restaurants and lounge, grocery store, hotel, garage and car dealership, convenience store, car wash, overnight camping and dump station. A variety of excellent recreational facilities include an Arena, a four sheet Curling complex, Ball Diamonds, Soccer Fields, an RV Park and a Day Use Park complete with a Fish Pond. The Legal Community Services Board administers Legals recreational facilities and organizes a variety of programs.

Legal has two school systems with Legal School providing education in English for K-9. As well, there is a playschool program at Legal School for 3 & 4 year olds. Legal also has a Francophone School, Ecole Citadelle, which offers K-9. A Francophone playschool is also offered for 3 & 4 year olds at Ecole Citadelle. Grades 10-12 students attend a modern new hi-tech school just minutes away at the Morinville Community High School. Francophone students have the opportunity to attend Maurice Lavallee, a francophone High School in Edmonton with bus service provided.

Housing for the elderly is provided at the Chateau Sturgeon Senior Citizens' Home, a lodge funded by the Sturgeon Foundation which provides individual rooms for seniors not requiring extensive nursing care.

Sunset and Sunrise Villa self-contained units are available to the seniors who want to maintain their independence while not having to be responsible for the maintenance and repairs of a house. The Town's elderly are encouraged to make use of the recreation facilities offered in the Club 60 Roses, a local organization for senior citizens. The Legal & District Lions Transportation Committee offers a bus service for the community including seniors and handicapped.

Roman Catholic Church services are offered in French and English Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.
